Hobbies play a significant role in our lives, offering a sense of fulfillment, relaxation, and the opportunity to learn and grow. For individuals who use wheelchairs, finding hobbies that are accessible and enjoyable is essential. Thankfully, there is a wide range of wheelchair-friendly hobbies that can be pursued with enthusiasm and passion.
In this blog post, we’ll explore some of these hobbies and how they contribute to a more inclusive and fulfilling life.
1. Gardening

This has got to be nr 1 on my list since it is my personal favourite! Not only do I consider it a hobby, but it doubles up as a form of exercise for me. Getting in and out of my chair, digging in the soil, reaching for plants, picking up and transferring potting soil, pots and plant all make for a pretty decent session of cardio and resistance training.
Gardening is a therapeutic and rewarding hobby that can be easily adapted for wheelchair users. Raised garden beds and container gardening allow individuals to cultivate plants, flowers, and vegetables without needing to stand or bend over. The joy of watching your garden bloom and enjoying the fruits of your labor is a gratifying experience for wheelchair users and garden enthusiasts alike.
2. Arts & Crafts
This has to be my nr 2! Even before I found myself in a wheelchair, I loved anything arts and crafts and it certainly didn’t change over the years.
Artistic expression knows no bounds, and there are numerous wheelchair-friendly art and craft activities to explore. Painting, drawing, pottery, sculpture and so many more activities can all be adapted to accommodate different mobility levels. Many communities offer accessible art studios and workshops that cater to individuals with disabilities, fostering creativity and self-expression.

3. Cooking & Baking

Cooking and baking are not necessarily my ultimate favourite hobbies, however, exploring the culinary world from a wheelchair is entirely feasible with some modifications to the kitchen.
Adaptive utensils, adjustable countertops, and lowered cabinets can make cooking and baking accessible for everyone. Experimenting with new recipes and sharing delicious meals with friends and family can be immensely satisfying.
4. Photography
Photography is an art form that allows people to capture the beauty of the world around them and it doesn’t exclude wheelchair users.
Wheelchair users can engage in photography with adapted camera equipment and accessible shooting locations. Whether it’s capturing landscapes, portraits, or abstract compositions, photography offers a unique perspective and a creative outlet.

5. Reading, Writing & Blogging

For those who love to immerse themselves in the world of words, reading and writing are wheelchair-friendly hobbies that require nothing more than a good book, a blank page or access to a smartphone or computer.
Accessible e-readers and voice-activated writing software have made these activities even more accessible for individuals with more profoundly limited mobility challenges.
Wheelchair-friendly hobbies are a testament to human creativity and adaptability. There are so many activities to choose from and they not only provide individuals with disabilities the opportunity to pursue their passions but also foster inclusion and diversity within our communities. Embracing hobbies helps break down barriers, promote understanding, and celebrate the unique talents and abilities of every individual.
So, whether you’re a wheelchair user looking for a new hobby or a supporter of inclusivity, consider exploring these wheelchair-friendly activities. They not only offer personal fulfilment but also contribute to a more inclusive and harmonious society where everyone can thrive.
